It was the sushi burger and the rainbow cheese toastie in 2016 that were floating around on Instagram last year taking it by storm. The year (2017) Instagram’s latest food trend, #cloudeggs, seem to be floating on a cloud of their own with a bright yellow egg nestled in the midst.
Not surprisingly, they look pretty, fluffy and delicious enough to taste like heaven (literally!).
What exactly are #cloudeggs?
Simple to make they involve separating the egg yolks and whipping the whites until they are fluffed up to look thick, before placing the yolk in the centre of the cloud.
The secret behind their popularity?
Because they look great when photographed and taste even better. In fact, if you want to get a little more creative you can make them look even and taste better by adding ingredients like herbs, cheese, bacon or similar ingredients into the white.
Some say it’s the modern spin on a 400-year-old French recipe
The French have been making something similar for centuries now. They call it something on the lines of Eggs in Snow states Daniel Gritzer the culinary director at Serious Eats, as stated in NPR.
As sophisticated as they may look to some, they are quite simple to make. Here’s how:
-Preheat oven to 450° and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
-Separate egg whites and egg yolks, placing the egg whites in a large bowl and the yolks in a small bowl.
-Season the egg whites with salt and pepper. Using a whisk or a hand mixer, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form. Gently fold in Parmesan, ham, and chives. Create 4 mounds of egg whites on the prepared baking sheet and indent the centres of each to look like nests. Bake until slightly golden, about 3 minutes.
-Carefully add an egg yolk to the centre of each egg white cloud. Season yolk with salt and pepper. Bake until the yolks are just set, about 3 minutes more.
